Front-Entry Walkways

Your front walkway is the first thing a visitor's feet touch. It should look intentional: straight lines, a finish that matches your driveway, and a width that fits two people passing comfortably. We typically pour these in 4-inch reinforced concrete with a broom finish for grip. We plan the joint layout so it lines up visually with your driveway's control joints instead of fighting them. Grading is the main challenge. A side yard often pitches toward or away from the neighboring lot, and we have to balance that slope against keeping water off both foundations. If a downspout empties near the planned path, we route drainage around or under the walk so runoff doesn't undercut the base over time. These walks usually run narrower than a front entry, often 2 to 3 feet, but still get the same 4-inch reinforced pour. A thin, unreinforced side path is exactly where frost heave shows up first.

Walkway Repair, Leveling & Replacement

Not every damaged walk needs to come out. Say the concrete itself is still sound: no through-cracks, no crumbling edges. If a section has just settled or tipped because of a void underneath, mudjacking can often fix it. That's the process of pumping a cement slurry beneath the slab to raise it back into place, usually in about a day. It costs roughly half to a quarter of full replacement. It's a good call when the panel is intact and the real problem is what's underneath it, not the concrete itself. Full replacement makes more sense once a slab is cracked all the way through, or heaved unevenly across multiple panels. The same goes for a slab spalling from years of de-icing salt, or one sitting on a base that has already failed. A walkway floats on a compacted base and doesn't need footing depth. Steps are different. Steps that carry real vertical load and tie into a stoop or porch typically need footings set to the 42-inch minimum frost depth required under Minnesota Rules 1303.1600 in our area. Skipping that step, pouring steps on a shallow footing to save time, is one of the most common mistakes we get called out to fix. A footing that sits above the frost line heaves seasonally, and it eventually cracks the steps loose from the walk. We plan the grade break, riser height, and footing depth together. That way the whole path, from street to door, moves as one system instead of two that fight each other every winter.

Concrete vs. Pavers vs. Flagstone: Choosing the Right Material

Homeowners weighing a new walkway usually land on one of three materials. Each behaves differently in a Minnesota winter. Poured concrete gives you a single, continuous surface with no joints for weeds, ants, or ice to work into. A properly built 4-inch reinforced slab commonly lasts 30 years or more with basic upkeep. It's also the most budget-friendly of the three per square foot installed. Pavers cost more up front. They let you swap a single damaged unit without redoing the whole path, which some homeowners like. But each paver joint is a seam where freeze-thaw movement and sand loss can create unevenness over time, and that needs periodic releveling. Flagstone sits at the top of the price range and gives a natural, upscale look. Individual stones can shift on their setting bed through repeated freeze-thaw cycles, though, and need occasional resetting. Pouring straight onto loose or uncompacted soil almost guarantees settling within a few years, no matter how good the concrete itself is. Placing joints too far apart, or skipping them on a longer run, forces the slab to crack wherever stress builds up, instead of along a clean, planned line. Pouring plain concrete without air entrainment saves a small amount up front. Then it costs far more in salt-scaling and surface flaking after two or three Minnesota winters. And grading a walk dead flat, instead of with a slight crown, leaves water sitting on the surface. There it refreezes into a sheet of ice right where people step. Walkway Slope & Drainage

Getting the slope right matters as much as the concrete mix. We plan every walkway with a cross-slope of about 1/8 to 1/4 inch of fall per foot. That moves water off the surface and away from your foundation, instead of letting it sit and refreeze. A walk that runs close to the house always slopes away from the wall, not toward it, so seasonal runoff doesn't work its way into the foundation over time. If a sump discharge or a low spot in the yard sends extra water across the planned path, we route that flow around or under the walkway, rather than letting it undercut the base. A walk that looks fine in July can turn into a hazard in January if the drainage wasn't planned for. Flat spots and slight dips are exactly where meltwater refreezes into glare ice.
