We build every exterior walkway with a 5 to 7 percent air-void system that meets ASTM C260. Freezing water inside the slab has somewhere to go instead of cracking it apart. Plenty of contractors pour plain mix and hope for the best. We don't.

Broom-finish is the budget-friendly baseline for a concrete patio, typically $5–$10 per square foot. We drag a push broom across the fresh surface to create a light texture. That texture adds slip resistance underfoot. It helps around pool surrounds, entertaining areas, and rain-prone Minnesota yards. It's a smart choice if you want a full-yard patio now, with room to add a stamped overlay or decorative coating later.


Stamped concrete copies the look of natural stone, brick, or wood at a fraction of the material cost. It typically runs $12–$18+ per square foot, depending on pattern complexity and color work. Colored and stained patios sit between plain and fully stamped work, typically $10–$14 per square foot. We mix integral color into the concrete before the pour for a consistent tone across the whole slab. Acid-based or water-based stains go on after curing instead, for a mottled, marbled look. Staining is the better fit if you want a custom color without paying for a full stamped pattern.


Both concrete and pavers can perform well in Minnesota when they're installed right, but they trade off differently. Cost: poured concrete generally costs less per square foot than pavers at a similar finish level. Lifespan: a properly built concrete patio typically lasts 20–40 years. Pavers can last around 50 years. But they're more prone to heaving and uneven surfaces as innesota's 40–50+ annual freeze-thaw cycles work the joints and base. Maintenance: concrete needs resealing roughly every 2–3 years. Pavers need periodic joint-sand top-ups and occasional releveling as individual units shift over time. Repairs: a cracked paver can be popped out and swapped. A damaged concrete section gets patched or resurfaced instead of replaced piece by piece. Pick concrete for a lower installed cost, a custom look (stamped, colored, or exposed aggregate), and no joints to maintain. Pick pavers if replacing individual units matters more to you than long-term upkeep.
Start with how you'll use the space. A dining zone needs room for a table plus walk-around clearance. A fire-pit zone needs seating room plus safe clearance from structures. If the patio connects to a walkway, plan that transition before the pour, not after. Simple rectangular layouts cost less per square foot than complex shapes, curves, or patios with multiple levels. Curved forms and stepped grades take more labor to form and finish. Patio size also drives control-joint planning. Larger slabs need more joints, spaced no more than 10–12 feet apart. These joints control where the concrete cracks as it cures and shifts with the seasons.


Drainage is one of the most important — and most overlooked — parts of a patio build. Water that pools against your foundation instead of running off can lead to basement moisture and frost-heave problems over time. We slope every patio slab a minimum of 1/8" per running foot away from the house. A typical 4" slab sits roughly 2" above surrounding grade. Before pour day, we check the site's grading, soil drainage, and how water moves across the yard. Then we adjust the base and slope plan to match. Most patio pages skip this detail. We treat it as a core engineering step, not an afterthought.
Several things move the price beyond the base per-square-foot rate. Total square footage matters most. So does the finish and design tier you pick. Site access matters too — tight side yards, grade changes, and distance from the street all add labor. If an old patio needs to come out first, that adds cost. Every 1% of excess water above that range can cut concrete strength by roughly 5%. We build to Minnesota's roughly 42" frost line, which sets our base-depth requirements. We target 3,500–4,000 PSI compressive strength for patio work. Skip this level of prep, and a patio can show scaling, spalling, and cracking within 3–5 years.
